The hard materials made it difficult to make round edges, so the runes are more angular than our letters.Īt the excavation of the Roskilde 6 long ship, which was found beneath the Museum Island at the Viking Ship Museum, the archaeologists found a runic-stick. The Vikings did not write on paper, but carved them into stone, wood or iron. Runes were used alongside our present-day alphabet up until the 14th century. Short runic inscriptions are also found on everyday artefacts from Viking towns and marketplaces. The runic stones of the Viking Age were erected in commemoration of powerful leaders and their heroic achievements. The strange þ-rune is pronounced 'th', a sound we find today especially in English words like 'the', 'think' and 'throne'.Įlder Futhark had 24 letters while Younger Futhark, developed at the beginning of the Viking Age, had only 16 letters.Įlder Futhark inscriptions etched by craftsmen and owners have been found on coins, garment brooches, weapons and implements dating primarily from the era of the Iron Age princes. The runic alphabet is named after its first six letters: The oldest runes are often found on items such as coins, suit buckles, weapons and implements, and are often the names of the owner of the item or the name of the person who made it. The earliest runic inscriptions, dating from ca 150 AD, are particularly common in what is now Denmark, Northern Germany and Southern Sweden. Runes developed in areas populated by Germanic tribes, probably inspired by the Latin alphabet of the Romans. What are runes?ĭuring the first centuries AD, the Romans influenced most of Europe. The Latin letters are the ones we use today. They are imitations of the Latin letters used in most of Europe during the Viking era.

Of fundamental importance was the observation of the positively charged hole left by an electron in a noble gas atom. A better understanding of the tunnel effect can help improve its technical application. The quantum mechanical tunnelling effect is used, for example, in scanning tunnelling microscopes and flash memories on which data is stored in USB sticks. In this process, the charge carriers penetrate an energy barrier that they could not overcome according to the laws of classical physics. For example, they have observed electrons in the quantum mechanical process of tunnelling. With these extremely short flashes of light, researchers led by Ferenc Krausz have gained many new insights into the behaviour of electrons. Attosecond physics leads to faster electronics Meanwhile, the shortest light pulses flash for less than 100 attoseconds. When the electrons are recaptured, the atoms emit flashes of a few 100 attoseconds. They shot these light pulses at noble gas atoms and pulled electrons out of the electron shells of the atoms with the strong electromagnetic fields of the flashes. With such intense, perfectly controlled light pulses, which still lasted a few femtoseconds, the researchers led by Ferenc Krausz exerted forces on electrically charged particles such as electrons and protons that correspond to the inner-atomic forces. the exact course of a light wave, using the Ted Hänsch’s frequency comb technique, which also won a Nobel Prize - in 2005. In 2002, Ferenc Krausz and Theodor Hänsch, who is also director at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics and professor at the LMU, succeeded in controlling not only the intensity of light pulses but also the phase, i.e. The basis for this was laid by Ferenc Krausz and his compatriot Robert Szipöcs with the development of mirrors with which extremely intense laser pulses can be generated from a few oscillations of a light wave. Their use for observing electron movements in atoms was honoured by Nature and Science as one of the 10 most important scientific achievements of 2002. In 2001, Ferenc Krausz generated light pulses in the attosecond range (1 attosecond = 10-18 seconds) for the first time. Jennings sold and distributed his four-song demo album at his performances and later recorded additional tracks to form a full EP called What Is Love?, which he distributed at his concerts in New York and back home in Toledo.Īfter Showtime in Harlem Jennings began touring, and he received offers for recording contracts from a number of prominent studios. Jennings eventually won the audience over, and he won the Showtime in Harlem talent competition after five rounds, gaining confidence and fans with every performance. In 2005 Jennings told Corey Moore in an interview on NPR that the Showtime audience seemed skeptical when he walked on stage, unsure how to respond to an artist who looked and dressed like a rapper but was carrying an acoustic guitar. Two days after his release he recorded a four-song demo album, and a little more than three weeks later he performed before an audience of millions on Showtime in Harlem. Jennings chose the stage name "Lyfe," to reference the trials of life and to his tendency to ask the question "why" in his compositions, he explained to Sewell. "You start your career when you start it," he told Barhite. At twenty-eight years old, Jennings thought that he had little time to waste, though he had learned to accept the limitations that prison had placed on his development. Two days before his release from prison, Jennings received word that his audition tape had been accepted. Jennings convinced prison administrators to allow him to film performances given to audiences of inmates and was allowed to send his audition tape to the show's producers. As his release drew near, Jennings decided on a new goal, to perform live on Showtime in Harlem, a televised musical variety competition produced at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Though Jennings was incarcerated until December of 2002, he found a receptive audience among his fellow inmates. "I set myself some goals and that translated to music." In 1997 Jennings received a copy of Erykah Badu's album Baduizm and, in listening to Badu's introspective compositions, began developing songs that explored the more philosophical side of romance, urban life, prison, and the African-American experience. "When I was in jail, I did a lot of soul searching," Jennings said to Brandi Barhite in the Toledo Free Press in 2008. He sang with a prison gospel choir and learned to play the acoustic guitar, the only instrument he was allowed to use. Jennings remained in prison for almost ten years, having failed his parole evaluations, but found ample time to work on his music. Jennings became involved in crime, and at age nineteen he was convicted of third-degree arson and sentenced to prison. Though successful in the local circuit, The Dotsons eventually disbanded as Jennings and his family members drifted apart. The Dotsons wrote and performed songs reminiscent of the popular R&B vocal groups of the time like Troop and New Edition and were popular at local talent competitions. In the 1980s Dotson's sons Tim and Chris formed a teen singing group, which they called The Dotsons, and asked Jennings, then ten years old, and his brother Jay to join the group. Jennings's uncle, Keith Dotson, was a working musician who sang with the Toledo Motown group KGB. "You need an outlet for the problems that you face, and I went through all the things associated with the streets." "I've been writing since I was little," Jennings said in an interview with Rhonda B. Before he was in high school, Jennings was already writing his own songs. Jennings's interest in writing and playing music began when he was in elementary school, and he performed with the choir at Cavalry Baptist Church. Spent Ten Years in PrisonĬhester "Lyfe" Jennings was born on June 3, 1973, and raised in Toledo, Ohio, where he and his four siblings-sister Dawn and brothers Charles, Jay, and Paul-attended the city's public schools. Some critics have even credited Jennings as a pioneer of a new genre one that National Public Radio (NPR) host Corey Moore called "Folk Soul." Building on the success of his debut, Jennings released two additional albums, gaining fans and prestige with each release and helping to define a new generation of R&B music. Critics have called Jennings a throwback to the R&B singers of the 1960s, including such legendary artists as Sam Cooke and Al Green, while his use of hip-hop beats and collaborations with rappers connects his music to contemporary developments in R&B. The platinum-selling recording artist is also a multi-instrumentalist who plays guitar, bass, and piano. Lyfe Jennings is a singer and songwriter, crafting emotional ballads with a unique sound that blurs the lines between R&B, hip-hop, and folk music. Its a nice change of pace from the race games I also enjoy. I got this game for under $20 and don't see how you wouldn't enjoy it if you had so little $$$ in it. I can see how it would be beneficial to have a hired hand, and I may get there after much more game play, but I really like to "see" the work I do. You CAN hire it done and leave it with your farm hand.but th ats what I like to do. So far I don't see any major penalties for my slow aning I personally prefer to mow and disc fields. But am looking forward to planting and getting involved in the livestock part of this game. Have only harvested crops, tilled fields, and mowed grass thus far. I do wish they had a side by side to move around the map, but you can run places fast enough. This game requires a lot of time, just like real farming. I wasted a bit of money as I learned how to buy equipment.and which attachment will work with which tractor. I like the bulletin boards where you can find work, such as mowing a field, to earn money. I personally like the "in cab" view for most all of what this game offers.
Daily Schedule Template (Microsoft Excel format).Letter for Substitute Teacher (Microsoft Word format). We've developed some sample 504 plans, curated some of the best school care advice from around the Internet, and have created a robust back-to-school resource to keep families with diabetes safe and informed. Students with diabetes should be encouraged and empowered to ask for help when they need it (from a teacher, the school nurse, or a friend), they should be able to handle any eating situations at school, and should have all the supplies they need to take care of their diabetes on hand and readily available. In short, schools should provide trained staff to help students with diabetes manage their health condition throughout the school day without issue, and diabetes should not be a reason for preventing field trips or school activities or requiring family members to visit school for diabetes needs.Īnd while we spend a lot of time preparing parents and teachers for diabetes at school, we also need to remember that kids need to be prepared for school and the chance to expand their independence.Ĭhildren with diabetes should know how to monitor and manage their diabetes needs in accordance with their age, ability, and maturity. These laws keep students with diabetes safe and protect their right to learn. Walden is here for you. There are laws in place to help protect the rights of students with diabetes. We know finding eating disorder treatment can be tough. Department of Education for more information on Chapter 504. And together with the treatment professionals at Walden, your child will have allies against the eating disorder that can assure the best chance at full recovery. It can take some calm and some patience to go through this process, but remember that you are your child’s best advocate. But it is likely that your clinical team has written materials and may be willing to speak to the school and advocate for meal support that is consistent with your child’s treatment goals. And, to be honest, they balked at first at providing meal support as they had never had a student with an eating disorder. The school needed some inter communication from our treatment team on how to provide meal support. I was to supplement any uneaten food with Ensure at home that night. It was supported and I was made aware that day by email whether lunch was completed or not. My daughter went to her office to eat lunch. It was the adjustment counselor, but it could have been the nurse. We filed a 504 health plan seeking accommodations for meal support and identified the school professional who would support my daughter’s lunch while at school. If your child’s classmate has diabetes for example, likely they have a 504 health plan as well. It is a flexible document that can be rescinded at any time. In order to seek accommodations under section 504 for a health plan one needs to provide a letter of diagnosis from a physician, or treatment clinician stating a diagnosis and stating the accommodations sought. It is separate from the Special Education Act. Chapter 504 is a federal mandate and part of the Federal Civil Rights Act protecting all students coming under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Identifying who this person is, is important if you are seeking support for meals or accommodations like removal from physical education classes or health class during treatment. Sometimes it is the administrator who is responsible for developing health plans and sometimes it’s someone at the district level. A 504 plan is a binding, written plan outlining accommodations, services, and/or programs that will be provided to your child in school. It is important to identify who at your school is the administrator responsible for overseeing children on health plans or accommodations under Chapter 504. The school nurse was one and the administrator was another. Our team helped me identify those at the school who would be in a position to render aid. It is a personal decision, and one to think over the ramifications with your team. The first step you can take as a parent is to identify who (if anyone) at the school to discuss your child’s treatment with. Rely on your clinicians to give you an honest answer as to where your child is in their treatment plan, and to identify and create a support net for the school day. But your clinical team at Walden is very experienced in creating relationships in the community, perhaps in your school, and can be a bridge in advocating for your child’s needs during the school day. And if you have a child in treatment for an eating disorder it can be a pretty scary time as well. The start to the school year is usually filled with mixed emotions by parents.

The characters not only see more action, but also deal with espionage as they try to track down where Charlies father is and how to free him once found. One that is carried over from the events of Kelly’s life from the previous story. While Kelly, Charlies frenemy claims her bracelet is broken, it becomes clear later on in the book that Kelly sees an opportunity that she doesn’t want to pass up. Of course, Mac and Maria aren’t the only ones on Charlies radar. In this case, now it was Charlies turn to find a way to help them. I enjoyed how the author had the characters deal with these new issues since in the last book, Mac and Maria were focused on helping Charlie. For example, Maria has the abilities of a monkey but this leads to side-effects similar to the soldiers Charlie has faced whereas Mac, has more of a defensive ability but with a device that is half programed. Charlie also is forced to help her friends a just to the powers they now have from the bracelets they found. Where as the first book focused on Charlies school and social life when moving to her new home, this book shifts the focus to dealing with the organization. Now with the help of some former scientists who used to work with her father Charlie must not only finish learning about her powers, but help her friends master their own. Not only did have more action, but it also had a spy thriller vibe to it.Īfter discovering that her father has been captured by the same group of human animal hybrids who tried to kidnapped Mac, Charlie comes clean with her family about the bracelet and finds out her mother knows more about the group’s connection to her father’s past career. Based on the ending of the first book, I figured this one would be more focused on the using Charlies powers in an action adventure kind of story. They’re the only company in the UK with genuine components to do so. Here in the UK, Original Cobblers have been accredited by Red Wing themselves in repairing their iconic footwear in the UK for 7 years now. The sole offers the boot most of its strength and if excessively worn, can compromise the structure of the upper – it pays to keep them in good condition. Maintaining the sole of a Red Wing boot is an important part of the boot-care routine. Red Wing encourages their customers to look after their boots, and offers an array of care products and resoling options when the time comes. Now more than ever, it’s important to consider brands that put quality and craftsmanship above fashion trends. Not only does the classic silhouette of the Moc Toe transcend seasonal trends but it also provides a comfortable, affordable, and durable footwear option. Today, the boots have become a staple of the heritage scene and beyond, thanks to their genuine place in Americana history. Known more familiarly today as the classic Moc Toe, the boot would go on to become Red Wing’s most famous silhouette and colourway. In 1952, Red Wing introduced the Irish Red Setter Sport boot – the 877. Originally designed for hunting, the Red Wing boots were soon adopted by millions of American workers on account of their all-day comfort and durability. They went on to develop boots for oil field workers in 1920 and introduced their first boot for women (the Gloria) in 1926, a silhouette you can still buy today.īetween 19, the company expanded with the introduction of mobile salesmen that would travel from factory to workplace, making it more convenient for workers to buy their specialty boots. The Original boots were built shin-high from a combination of leather, laces, and buckles. They’ve been making the same, iconic shoes since 1905, back when Charles Beckman, a successful local shoe Merchant, founded the company in a small Minnesota town by the name of, you guessed it, Red Wing. Red Wing Heritage’s story goes way back, long before I’d turned my attention to them. ‘Hench’ and ‘spenny’ they may be, but they’re still going. I still have these boots and, unlike anything else I own, they just look better and better, unlike any high street copy or version which would have been replaced indefinitely. Like fine wine and Pierce Brosnan, they’ve only got more refined over the years. They’re investment boots for the long haul. And yet the general reaction in that North London boozer could be summed up by the words of one friend: “your shoes are hench and spenny, bruv.” There I was, wearing boots built to last forever boots that will only gain character and a natural patina with the passing years footwear you can treat and resole rather than simply chuck and replace. Even shoes lost their space everything started to look like a pair of leather rulers. I think it was called ‘tailored’ a tragic misuse of the word. Remember that? When everything went narrow. This was, after all, straight off the back of the streamlined trend. They didn’t quite understand the chunky aesthetic. I remember taking them on their first outing to the pub to a host of mixed reviews from pals who were yet to relinquish either their pointy, highstreet-bought oxfords or their sneaker-only philosophy. Red Wing boots seemed like a good first step. I was an adult in the making, starting from the feet up. I was looking to step away from the cheap, fast-fashion buys of the past and instead move towards building a closet full of things I’d love forever. You see, shortly after graduating from university, I found myself attempting to evolve my wardrobe. It wasn’t just the film that piqued my curiosity it was something about the classic workwear scene in general. This was shortly after watching One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and deciding I wanted to recreate Jack Nicholson’s Randle McMurphy prisoner chic. I’d brought back a pair of Red Wing Classic Moc 6-Inch boots with me. I had just returned from a trip to New York City.
